Day 4 Day 5
|
DAY 4 – ROSEBUD Don’t
get caught wasting time watching the sun rise on the mountains – there
will be time for that later. The Cinnamon Buns at That's
Crafty, on Highway 9 on the way to Rosebud, are just
coming out of the oven! Around
the corner from the RockyView Hotel is Cochrane Coffee Traders, with
organic fair trade coffee – grab a coffee
for the road. If Westlands
Bookstore next door is open – okay take a few minutes and see what
they have, its always a treat to find great little bookstores. Rosebud
is about one hour east of Calgary – a little backtrack if you are in
the Sundre area after spending a day at Up Country Kilns.
So after eating the giant cinnamon bun we are finally arriving in
the wonderful community of Rosebud – a true testimony to what a group
of devoted arts entrepreneurs can do.
This little prairie town was pretty well abandoned when someone
thought it would make a great destination for dinner theatre and a
gallery and an actual School for the Arts.
There
are several B&B’s in the town.
North
this morning to Red Deer, home to another of Canada’s top arts schools
– the Red Deer College. They
host lots of summer
programming, glass blowing, clay work,
painting…hopefully you have used the Muse Cruise guide and booked a
day to immerse yourself and play! Red
Deer has two co-operatively operated artists spaces.
Clayworker Trudy Golley and Metalsmith Paul Leathers of Alluvium
are a must to see. At
the end of this day you can move on to Edmonton or wait until morning.
B&B’s abound in the foothills and surrounding ranchland.
You may even end up in a truly western adventure – riding a
horse or taking a hayride. But
we wont tell anyone – we’ll call it cowboy culture!
