Day 10 and 11
|
DAY 10, 11 – THE ICEFIELD PARKWAY To BANFF Just
when you thought it couldn’t get any better – you are in for one of
the World’s most scenic drives. Words
cannot describe the majesty and the power of what you will see on
this drive south on the Icefields Parkway. This route ranks third
in the top 100 Getaways
for North American travelers! Suggested
stop, and you really should prebook this one, is the NumTiJah Lodge
just north of Lake Louise on the Parkway.
This is the original structure built by outfitter and arts
philanthropist Jimmy Simpson. The
entire lodge is filled with artwork done on site by artists in residence
over the years. A very nice
break in the long drive. Or
perhaps you would prefer to drive straight on to Banff.
Here
you will see the contrast between two mountain communities. One that is
an hour from a major centre – Banff – and the one you just left that
is 4 hours from a major centre – Jasper.
Banff’s pace is noticeably faster.
This close proximity to Calgary is surely one of the reasons for
the wonderful Banff Centre – be sure to check out their offerings
tonight. The Whyte Museum
offers a look at contemporary Canadian artwork as well as their historical
collection. The Buffalo
Nations Museum across the river offers a look at First Nations work and
culture – an opportunity to hear some storytelling or maybe even learn
how to quill!
