Artists on Rails

~Experience Edmonton to Jasper through the eyes of an artist~

What can I say about this wonderful little unexploited piece of the Rockies?  It is no surprise that such a pristine environment would result in a community of artists inspired by 'sense of place'.  Jasper has drawn artists to the mountains for decades.

"In the railway building days, artists came west, photographers especially, to gather material for advertising brochures, to create paintings that would be used on the walls of CPR hotels – to bring the visual grandeur of the Rockies to the clients of the railway.  Members of the Canadian Group of Seven came out to look at this new scenery and even they were overwhelmed by what they saw."  Author and Historian Lisa Christensen, Hikers Guide to Art of the Canadian Rockies

Most of the restaurants and hotels - even the Capital City Savings Credit Union - are decorated with these 'overwhelming' vistas -as seen through the eyes of Jasper artists.  Don't hesitate to ask about what you see.

(And you can walk everywhere!  This is a must on your muse cruise, the leisurely pace of mountain life and the cool night air will renew you in body and spirit before you move on.)
