Origins for the word Winnipeg can found in western Cree words like wīnipēk , meaning "muddy waters".   Wīni  meaning dirty, or soiled and nipiy meaning water.  Downtown Winnipeg is centred at the intersection of Portage Avenue and Main Street less than one kilometre from The Forks of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers.  This intersection is also known as the windiest in Canada.

While it may be known for its flat geography and wild winds with potential flooding from the nearby rivers...and the nickname "Winterpeg" because of the prolonged cold winters...don't be fooled.  Manitoba's capital city boasts a Royal Ballet Company, an Opera Company and North America's second largest Fringe Festival!

(The Forks in Winnipeg are also Mile 0 for the Musin' Along the Yellowhead Tour...a unique way to take in Western Canada's arts and cultures.)
